I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m genuinely hyped for Avengers: Endgame Encore. Marvel just dropped a trailer, and tickets are officially on sale now! Let’s get that out of the way first. The trailer Marvel just released literally gave me goosebumps. I was one of the fans who did the 22-movie Marvel Marathon in 2019, and I’ve still got my T-shirt right here to prove it. Living in the Regal Irvine Spectrum theater for three days was an unforgettable experience. It was an experience where I legitimately got hemorrhoids. Sorry if that’s TMI, but it’s the truth. Despite the physical toll on my body, I somehow still found a way to have a great time. And I gained a whole new community of friends all while living in a movie theater.
The Return of the Theatrical Event
I haven’t felt that same level of goosebumps since seeing the portal scene on opening night. Those chills just made waves throughout my entire body.
Regardless of what people say about Marvel, DC, comic book adaptations, and how much they whine about “comic book movie fatigue,” there’s absolutely no doubt about one thing. The Marvel Cinematic Universe gave those of us who grew up watching, reading, and playing these franchises something we never got before: genuine quality films.
You can argue that since Endgame, the studio hasn’t been hitting on all cylinders. I completely agree with you. I used to go into an MCU movie thinking, “This is going to be a hit, and this is something we’re going to be talking about for months on end.” Then we got films like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Captain America: Brave New World.
But even with those missteps, you can’t deny that the buildup to Endgame was unprecedented. We had never seen a 22-movie franchise build up to a massive cultural event like that. I look back across the years and think about how my life has changed, how much I’ve grown as a person, and how I essentially grew up with this franchise.
Honestly, for some younger fans, this universe is all they know. Some people were born when Iron Man started, and they grew up right alongside the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Avengers: Endgame Encore is Marvel’s way of celebrating that legacy. They’re marketing it as a chance for all of us to relive those theater moments together. We get to laugh, cry, cheer, and just go for a ride with this epic all over again.
The Box Office Battle
Admittedly, I wasn’t too excited at first. I just thought to myself, “Hey, this is just a cash grab.” I saw it as another chance for them to retake the number one box office spot in the world, which Avatar currently holds again (Avatar currently sits at a massive $2.92 billion globally, while Endgame is right behind it at $2.79 billion). They have to make around $135 million to achieve that. While I originally thought there was no chance of that happening, watching this new trailer completely changed my mind.
Tickets are already selling out, and it’s very likely going to become the number one box office movie in history once again. Avengers: Endgame Encore hits theaters on September 25th in IMAX, Dolby, ScreenX, and all premium formats.
For those of you wondering about “Infinity Vision,” don’t stress about it. It’s just a standard certification label Disney created to stamp on premium formats. I’ll break that down in a separate post soon because I’ve got a lot of thoughts on it.
But yeah, I’m just hyped. I’m surprised a trailer for a movie I already saw got me to feel this kind of emotion again. Marvel knows how to take us on a ride. Regardless of what the superhero fatigue crowd says, comic book movies are here to stay, and Marvel remains on top. They’re dominating the entire entertainment industry across games, TV, animation, and movies.
