The Wrong War: Why the Fight for Physical Media Has Become a Toxic Distraction

The gaming community is locked in a state of outrage. Since PlayStation announced its plan to move to an all-digital release model in January 2028, social media has been filled with angry posts and community notes.

At first this could have been a unified movement for consumer rights, but instead it devolved into a hate and harassment campaign.

First, we saw influencers disingenuously latch onto the outrage to farm engagement. Small creators took the opportunity to ride the algorithm and grew their followings exponentially in a matter of days. The lack of authenticity became obvious when many of these accounts backpedaled, admitting they would still play the boycotted games and consoles because they needed to do it for their jobs.

This performative outrage fueled a growing wave of online toxicity. The movement is now entirely aimless. If you don’t align perfectly with their anger, you’re immediately attacked. Even early supporters of the boycott who admitted they still wanted to play upcoming massive releases were harassed by anonymous accounts.
